A13 Green

The A13 Green project was an arts-led regeneration project that took place during the summers of 2013 and 2014. Funded by Newham Council, The Brick Box ran a programme of unique events underneath the A13 flyover in Canning Town to animate this previously under-used space, bring local people together, and attract visitors to the borough.

Every Friday night from mid July until mid September, the space opposite Canning Town station was transformed into an urban village green, complete with bandstand, grass, games and a whole host of spectacular events from Brazilian choirs to storytelling, live bands to light installations.

The activities also explored the longer term possibilities of the space and informed the future landscaping proposals for the site. This wasn’t just an arts project but an exercise in live placemaking and people.

"Under the A13 has created a melting pot of families, visitors and locals. If only Canning Town and Newham could come together like this all the time...a unique, unusual, utopia."

Patrica, Newham resident

"I have come to the A13 every week since it started. It has been excellent for families and friends. We meet every week and thoroughly enjoy ourselves. It has brought our community together again. We shall be lost without it."
