Kingston May Merrie
The Brick Box were commissioned by Kingston First BID (Business Improvement District) to produce and curate the annual May Merrie on 4th May 2015. The theme of the event was ‘Crowning Kingston’, celebrating Kingston’s unique royal heritage with a contemporary twist. A crown of gold decorated around Kingston’s Town Centre with pavements, trees and benches all adorned. The public were invited to help decorate the town by taking part in Guerrilla knitting workshops, tying gold thread between the trees.
Performances and workshops included historical re-enactments of the Saxon Kings, crown making workshops at the Rose Theatre, Mock Coronations at All Saints Church (the site of the original coronations) and much more. We?provided crown and sceptre-making workshops in local primary schools in the lead up to the event, and children donned their regal wears for a parade around the town in the middle of the afternoon.
The event was organised in collaboration with local businesses and community groups and saw thousands of people come to the town centre for the day.
