How do you survive in a world of giant soul sucking lizards?

Jacob v Joyce – brick box associate artist, long-time friend and purveyor of power animals – tells us about his latest project.

Taking place at Art Nouveau Brixton from 1 – 14 May, Survival Guides is a programme of art, public discussions, and performances exploring how to combat the oppressive structures that dominate our social and political landscapes.

We will delve into local black history, look gentrification squarely in the eye, think fluidly about queer sexuality and shake up fixed notions of gender identity. Film screenings that chronicle Brixton’s squatted communities and sustainability workshops for all ages. Survival Guides will culminate with a performance evening at Brixton East, celebrating the journey and struggles of the West African and Afro-Cuban deities.

By uniting grassroots organisations, discussion groups and individuals we can share tools and take on greater social political dexterity in our community, celebrate our histories, and use creativity to combat feelings of disempowerment.

In collaboration with House of Brag, Spoken Word London, Black Activists Rising Against Cuts, Plunge Theatre, South London Antifascists, Whale of a Time, Sex Workers Open University, London Lucumi Choir, Mind Like Magpie and Alice Moon to name but a few.
